Description

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is a globally standardised, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished and finished textile products at all processing levels, and their accessories. STANDARD 100 certification provides targeted product stewardship support for companies in the textile chain with human-ecological product safety, based on a scientific criteria catalogue and neutral laboratory tests. For consumers and purchasers, the STANDARD 100 product label is reliable proof that textile products are tested in accordance with strict global standards to protect from harmful substances.

Test criteria

The OEKO-TEX® criteria catalogue contains a wide variety of test parameters. The central component of the STANDARD 100 are requirements, limit values and test methods based on science. In many cases, the test criteria and limit values go far beyond the applicable national and international standards. The inclusion of numerous additional potentially harmful substances strongly reflects the pioneering role that the STANDARD 100 has played for many years now.

Term of validity

A STANDARD 100 certificate is valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually. We recommend starting the renewal process up to three months before expiration to ensure continuous product safety and smooth process along the modular OEKO-TEX® system. Many downstream certifications are dependent on pre-certified components from suppliers.

Further specifications

In principle, all textile articles in every stage of processing are suitable for a STANDARD 100 certification, starting from the threads to the finished fabrics and finished articles. According to a modular system we test every single component and ingredient before the final article is allowed to carry the STANDARD 100 label. This includes threads, buttons, zippers and linings. The prints and coatings applied to the outer material are also tested for harmful substances according to the criteria applicable to them. Whether baby textiles, clothing, home textiles or decorative materials: Products carrying the STANDARD 100 label signal trust.

Certification process

Application
The applicant completes the application form and provides representative product samples for testing.

Testing
We create an individual testing plan for your application request, test the provided samples in our labs and send you a detailed test report.

Declaration of Conformity / Quality Assurance System
If your submitted product samples meet the required STANDARD 100 criteria, you have to sign a declaration of conformity that the products from your current production comply with the tested sample materials. Additionally, you have to provide proof that you have a quality assurance system in place that ensures the human-ecological quality of your products throughout the entire term of the issued certificate.

On-site audit
During an on-site audit at your premises, our OEKO-TEX® experts will confirm all the certification details. The audit may be either before or shortly after the certification is finished.

Certificate
We will issue certificate to you which allows you to mark and advertise your products with the STANDARD 100 label.

Specific benefits

●  The OEKO-TEX® criteria catalogue is applied worldwide and provides a standardized requirement profile for purchasing and delivery conditions, which simplifies and accelerates the flow of information.

●  The greater transparency increases product safety, especially for companies with extremely short production cycles and expensive internal quality assurance systems, and provides significant time-savings.

●  It also aims to achieve legal conformity for importers, retailers and manufacturers as a result, ensure consumer protection with textile products that are harmless to human ecology, and simplify and accelerate supply relationships for manufacturers and retailers.

●  To provide the end consumer with a reliable, manufacturer-independent product label for non-hazardous products that are tested in accordance with the STANDARD 100 criteria catalogue and, in doing so, to help to effectively protect the consumer from harmful substance in textiles.

●  Based on a scientific criteria catalogue and neutral laboratory test, transparently document your responsibility with respect to the human-ecological product safety of your products for your customers throughout the textile chain, including brands, retailers and consumers.

●  The modular principle of STANDARD 100 lets you test and certify textile products throughout every processing stage. That lets you avoid duplicated tests and save costs by using certificates from prior stages – even with products with complex structures.

Q & A

  • To what extent is STANDARD 100 a modular system?

The concept of the OEKO-TEX® tests for harmful substances is based on a modular system. This means that certification is available for every stage of the textile value creation chain, and that certificates from prior stages are recognized. A successful test therefore allows you to label the textiles or materials in question with the STANDARD 100 label once the certification is attained.

  • Why do textiles made of organic cotton have to pass an additional test?

If you would like to list articles made of organic cotton with descriptions such as “organic” or “made of organically grown cotton” on your STANDARD 100 certificate, you must also have the products tested for genetically modified organisms (GMO) during the OEKO-TEX® laboratory tests. This gives you and your customers the security of knowing that your organic cotton products actually contain what they claim - genuine organic quality. If requested, the GMO test is of course also available for your articles made of conventionally grown cotton.

  • How is product conformity ensured after the STANDARD 100 certificate is issued?

On the one hand, the certificate holder must ensure product conformity. This is done on a daily basis through the internal company quality controls that were agreed in the declaration of conformity. On the other, Hohenstein, as the OEKO-TEX® test institute, carries out control tests each year on at least 25% of all the issued certificates. To do so, products from previous stages are tested based on samples from current certification processes. Furthermore, random samples of OEKO-TEX® certified products that are available on the market are purchased and tested again in the laboratory. In addition, independent auditors commissioned by OEKO-TEX® conduct unannounced site inspections to assess on-site quality assurance in the facilities.

  • When are ready-made textile products permitted to be labeled with the STANDARD 100 label?

Only when all the component parts meet the stipulated test criteria can the certification be awarded. For ready-made articles, a dedicated certificate must also exist, even if the individual components have already been certified in accordance with STANDARD 100.

  • Is a company quality assurance system mandatory for applicants?

Yes. Product certification in accordance with STANDARD 100 can be achieved only by establishing a suitable quality assurance system in the company to ensure product conformity. Likewise, the QM system must be recognized by Hohenstein.

  • What should be taken into consideration when selecting the test samples?

The test samples selected must cover the entire product group to be certified in accordance with STANDARD 100. Such a representative selection forms the basis for the article description on the certificate. An incomplete sample selection may lead to a restriction of the certified article group.

  • What specific issues do retailers need to note when using the STANDARD 100 label?

A STANDARD 100 label applied to a product alone is not sufficient as proof of successful testing for harmful substances. While purchasing product lines or findings, you should therefore always insist that the supplier submits a valid OEKO-TEX® certificate. The details on the STANDARD 100 test label (test number and test institution) must also correspond to those of the supplied certificate. Products that are not listed on the certificate must not be marked with the label.

  • What are the general considerations to be noted when using the STANDARD 100 label for advertising purposes?

Since the STANDARD 100 label is a protected trademark, all companies that want to use the label to highlight the certified textiles in their products and for other marketing activities must comply with the applicable provisions for using the label. Forgery and misuse of the trademark will be prosecuted under criminal and civil law. Furthermore, they may cause the underlying STANDARD 100 certificate to be revoked. A STANDARD 100 label is only valid if a test number that was actually issued and the responsible testing institute are shown on it. These details must also correspond to the company’s own certificate.
