Fire and flame for your safety.

The market: hotly contested. The demands: high. Textiles that are used for personal protective equipment (PPE) must overcome so many hurdles before they are allowed to be used for protective gloves, protective clothing for the fire brigade, heat protection clothing, high-visibility warning clothing, weather and cold protective clothing, welding safety clothing, UV protective clothing, cut-resistant clothing, knee protection or clothing with protection from electrostatic charge and from the thermal risks of an electric arc.

Here it is helpful to have a strong partner on side who is familiar with the statutory requirements of PPE and the required test parameters and who is committed to optimum product performance and high wear comfort - someone like us.

Hohenstein conducts tests in a neutral and competent manner in order to determine whether your products satisfy both internal quality standards and the requirements of regulation (EU) 2016/425 so that they can be sold as PPE. We also offer various services for all types of workwear which helps you to keep a cool head.

Hohenstein services for a protective function.

We investigate how well your products protect from heat, cold, natural and artificial UV radiation as well as flames. Do not miss out: take advantage of our decades of experience:

Appointed certification body for fire-resistant clothing for the participating countries (HuPF)

Accredited and notified body comprising a testing laboratory and certification centre for personal protective equipment in accordance with EU regulation 2016/425 (Notified Body No. 0555)

Certification and monitored product tests of protective clothing: EU type examination certificate for PPE (CE certification label) and monitored product testing according to EU regulation 2016/425, Annex VII (Module C2) of category III products

Fitness for use tests, acceptance analyses and quality monitoring

Checking of textile UV protection

Checking the warning colour to ensure good day visibility in traffic

Checking primary products for personal protective equipment

Checking the construction and function parameters of textile fabrics

Checking and assessing the design with regard to compliance with the protective function

Implementing the flame treatment of protective clothing systems for fire fighters in cooperation with DuPont, Geneva (manikin test)

The EU regulation distinguishes between three categories:

PPE Category I (minor risks)

Personal protective equipment for which the user can assess its effectiveness against minor risks and that the effects of which, when they are gradual, can be perceived by the user in good time and without danger (e.g. protective clothing for protection against rain or gloves for gardening tasks).

PPE Category II

Personal protective equipment that cannot be classified as either category I or category III (such as high-visibility warning clothing or safety gloves that protect against mechanical risks).

PPE Category III (high/fatal risks)

Personal protective equipment that is intended to protect against fatal dangers or serious and irreversible damage to health and where the user itself cannot identify the immediate effect of the danger in good time (e.g. protective clothing for the fire brigade or protective gloves for fire fighters).

Certificates and certifications in the product area of PPE

EU type-examination (certificate)

An EU type-examination certificate is issued by a notified body if the product is subject to the EU harmonisation legalisation and an EU type-examination is provided as a conformity assessment procedure (for PPE Cat. II and III).

Product certificate

A product certificate is issued by a certification centre if the product is subject to the EU harmonisation legalisation and no EU type-examination is provided as a conformity assessment procedure (for PPE Cat. I).

Confirmations

The confirmation is issued for products which are not subject to any EU Regulation or Directive.

HuPF assessment (for products) and HuPF certificate (for materials/previous products)

The HuPF (German abbreviation for “Manufacturing and Testing Description for a Universal Fire-Resistant Clothing”) is a manufacturing standard for protective clothing used as part of the personal equipment for firefighters and is valid for the fire service in Germany. The basis for requesting a HuPF assessment Part 1 or 4 for a product is the presentation of a type-examination certificate valid for this product in connection with the fulfilment of the requirements of EN 469. The same applies for HuPF Part 2 or 3 for which the requirements of EN ISO 11612 must be fulfilled.

Minimise risks, maximise profits.

Textile materials that are used as personal protective equipment (PPE) are subject to the strictest requirements. A neutrally tested and certified product is the prerequisite for surviving in a fiercely contested market.

Using requirement standards and technical specifications, we certify your products according to Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment. Among other things, this clearly defines what has to be observed in terms of production and supply in the European Economic Area. The product range we have certified covers everything from protective clothing for the fire brigade to heat, cold, weatherproof clothing and high-visibility warning clothing as well as other personal protective equipment such as protective clothing against liquid chemicals or electrostatics, cut protection and welder protective clothing and protective gloves.

Personal protective equipment must provide safety above all. However, other aspects contribute to a successful introduction onto the market and the reliability of a product. A balance between function, design and sustainability is key.
